General Discussion / Re: UCONN, Xavier and the Pioneer Football League

While I’d love to see football return to X, I just don’t see it happening any time soon. The school just isn’t going to devote much money to it.

General Discussion / UCONN, Xavier and the Pioneer Football League
« Last post by nickgyp on September 13, 2024, 09:28:06 PM »
I brought this up on Xavier247 last week only as an idea given that the Huskies are looking for a place for its football team and Xavier, ostensibly, has non-scholarship football on a back burner. The Power 5 programs will continue to separate themselves from lesser programs. The latter will be left to play football, if at all, as their resources permit. Barring some sort of monetary miracle, UCONN?s football program will remain in the latter group.

Suffice it to say, it is a safe bet that UCONN hoops will remain king of its athletic program. And the Big East will want them to remain in the league. Since Villanova, Butler and Georgetown all play FCS level football and Xavier ?considering? it, how much of a stretch would it be to propose a PFL Big East eastern division? Perhaps, die-hard UCONN football fans could live with the Big East rivalries along with some games against FBS teams. (A fair number of FCS schools do this already.)

Just a thought. Basketball remains king; football survives for Huskies without breaking the bank. Xavier use to play Villanova in football years ago. Seems like it would be worth consideration particularly if Xavier has it on the back burner as a way to increase enrollment and if the Big East wants to keep UCONN in the fold.

General Discussion / Xavier podcast 41

FWIW:

During this podcast, A.D. Greg Christopher discusses Xavier athletics past, present and future. Xavier is discussed but nothing new. The med school takes priority and football is on the table. He mentions the lack of a stadium with estimates of a new one being in the $20-25 million range for a PFL type stadium. Seems steep as to have a serviceable stadium but what do I know?

Also noted Duquesne football which is now scholarship plays away games this fall at Toledo, Youngstown State and Boston College. All are teams Xavier used to play albeit BC games were longer ago. They play at Rooney Field which can?t possibly be worth anywhere near $20 million dollars but, again, what do I know? One site says that Duquesne?s 2022 male undergraduate enrollment was only 37% male. Cannot locate any info on Xavier?s current ratio but it is hard to imagine that it is near 50%. Not that it has to be. Duquesne room and board with tuition and other expenses nears a $65k/yr. price tag.
With exorbitant costs and shrinking numbers of college-aged students, how will Xavier continue to attract undergraduate students let alone males? Med schools attract as many females as males.

Mention of Xavier?s football future seems a bit more optimistic than what I gleaned from last November?s  mention of forgoing the gridiron as med school taking  precedence.

How true. Many colleges offer inane courses that substantively give you little more information than can be provided by a look at the December, 2020 People Magazine offered every visit to my dentist?s office. Read somewhere that a Harvard professor was going to offer a course on Taylor Swift for credits toward a degree. In recent memory, Xavier added a Criminal Justice major. Good luck paying back student loans on a probation officer?s salary.

Still waiting for my seventies? era Metaphysics degree to pay off. Still can?t fix a leaky faucet but I have spent hours thinking on the porcelain commode.

I think fewer people are going to college, too. It’s gotten unjustifiably expensive and people, especially guys, are again looking at the trades. You can earn a great living without 6 figures of college debt.

Bruce:

This involves not just football but a marching band as well with the hopes of adding 150-200 students. Very ambitious for a school with an undergraduate enrollment of 1850 students. Xavier?s new med school will add graduate students but it?s impact on annual undergraduate enrollment will only be felt for prospective pre-med students which, arguably, will not be a number in a higher range than those interest in football and/or marching band. With the continuing decline in the pool of college age student, the attractiveness of adding football at Xavier remains or so it would seem.
